Sustainable September

Date: Sep, Friday 1st 12:00 AM - Sep, Saturday 30th 11:59 PM

As part of our commitment to the environment the Uniting Church in the City has been organising events during the month of September for the past eight years focusing on sustainability.

The Uniting Church has always expressed an abiding concern with the wellbeing of the planet. We believe the natural environment is not merely a resource for the benefit of human beings, but has intrinsic value as part of God’s good creation. God gave us a job to do in Genesis when he called us to be stewards of the earth.

God blessed them, and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge of the fish, the birds, and all the wild animals. (Genesis 1: 28, NRSV)

Past Sustainable September events have included educational talks on fracking, food wastage, gardening and electric vehicles as well as environmentally focused bible studies.

This year's program will include incredible speakers, a book sale as well as a Christian sculptor creating a wonderful work of art in the Ross Memorial forecourt using materials sourced from verge collections.

The theme for 2017 is "For the Beauty of the Earth".

Ross Memorial Uniting Church will be hosting four talks during September. Speakers include:

  • David Galloway from the Curtin University Sustainability Program will be reflecting on how the thinking around sustainable development has evolved and changed over the past 30 years and how, as a Christian, his understanding of faith has developed with, and been informed by, his work.
  • Felicity Bairstow will speak on the importance of The Wetlands which are havens for flora and fauna and a special place for our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
  • Craig Donohue from CleanNRG, a specialist in energy assessments, will speak on Solar Batteries.
  • Bronnie Kemp from Atom Earth and Hydrosoil Enterprises will look at the varieties of soils in our parks and gardens and how we can improve our soils.

The talks will be held on Tuesday evenings during September at 6pm at Ross Memorial Uniting Church, cnr Hay & Colin Streets, West Perth. You are welcome to come earlier at 5.30pm for tea and coffee.

Wesley Uniting Church, cnr William & Hay Streets Perth, will also be hosting the following speakers at the 10am worship services during September: Rev Dr Herman Nienaber, Bishop Tom Wilmot, Rev Dr John Squires, Rev Elizabeth Raine and Rev Ruth Vertigan. Ecotheology discussions will be held after worship in the Guild Room.
