As a South African Muslim the diaspora of my cultural heritage and creative interpretation allows me to creatively address the current global rise of Islamophobia. My praxis plays on Oriental constructed anxieties; it is instructed in my designs to open up the issue of racial religious prejudice and the misunderstanding of Islam, in recognition of the auspices time frame in our current socio-political environment.

My artistic intent identifies heavily with my Islamic culture to honour and maintain the principles of traditional eastern art techniques and utilise western processes. With reference to creatively cross-cultural boundaries through contemporary post-modern ideas of socio-political spiritual conflict. By focusing on the persecution and plight of dislocation and trauma of the Arab Muslim and Syrian refugees.

My diverse background grants multifarious points of entry to add to a socio-cultural dialogue in facilitating a discourse concerning the body, unveiled as a political and public symbol and the veiled spiritual, private and sacred body. All interconnected directly and indirectly with ideas of incorporeality but also respecting the relationship and inter-connectedness between Islam and Christianity.

Meditation

Stripped now –
of clothing
of disciples
of friends.
Alone,
naked and vulnerable,
with nothing to protect you from the pain to come.

Reading

They took Jesus to a place called Golgotha, which means the place of the skull. They tried to give Him wine mixed with a drug called myrrh, but Jesus would not drink it.  Then they crucified Him and divided His clothing among themselves, throwing dice to see who would get each piece of clothing.

Mark 15:22-24
