Station 8
Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem (detail), oil on gold leaf and copper leaf, on marine ply. Size variable.
Photograph by Joe Tareha
At the eighth station, Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem, he then says to them "Do not weep for me, weep for yourselves and for your children".
This artwork uses images from the 2015 Jerusalem Slutwalk where over 400 women from Jerusalem gathered to walk and protest. These images are amongst the first you will find when Googling 'Jerusalem women'. It occurred to me that the women of Jerusalem (women everywhere) are still very much in a similar state of subjugation as they were 2000 years ago. I was struck at how little has changed. However, instead of weeping at the systemic effort on the part of the white supremacist capitalist patriarchy to keep women in a perpetual state of loss these women are fighting, they have turned their tears into an organised protest.
Meditation
Weep for the mothers and children of Jerusalem,
for Israeli and Palestinian,
for Jew and Moslem and Christian,
for the strangers in their midst.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
Pray that her people may live together in justice.
Pray that all people may live together in peace.

Reading
A large crowd of people followed Jesus; among them were some women who were weeping and wailing for Him. Jesus turned to them and said, “Women of Jerusalem, don’t cry for me, but for yourselves and for your children.”
