Although there has been considerable interest in euthanasia, deathscapes, and geographies of the corpse, human geography has had relatively little to say about the terminal body and its belongingness in contemporary, Western society. Ongoing social and political discussion surrounding ‘assisted dying’ suggest that a person must cast off the incurable body as a subject not worthy of life.

"Jesus, at this moment you stand judged and condemned. You take upon yourself all the accusations that human beings hurl against each other. You bear the contempt that has crushed people throughout the centuries. Give us the courage to be close to those who are condemned and rejected by the world, whether they be innocent or guilty. Now you set off toward your crucifixion. Give us the confidence in your love, which is stronger than death and will have the victory. Amen.”
Stations of the Cross: Community Prayer Edition by Timothy Radcliffe (2015)

Biography

Peter & Molly are performance-oriented artists based in Perth, Western Australia. They have been working in partnership since July 2015, and have since exhibited works at galleries including the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts and The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Their collaborative practice is founded upon a project of disruption and critique aimed at hermeneutic cultural and social systems; employing methods of film, sound and sculpture, to create immersive and striking installations.

Meditation

Pilate asked what crime Jesus had committed.
It was a good question.
Jesus had annoyed the religious leaders, of that there was no doubt.
He had been critical of social and religious structures.
He had healed villagers;
He had told stories to the crowds;
He was probably a threat to public law and order;
But was that enough to condemn Him, to end His life?
But He would not defend Himself –
The storyteller was silent now
and the crowd was noisy
and Pilate handed Him over to be crucified.

Reading

Jesus was taken in chains to Pilate.  The chief priests were accusing Jesus of many things, so Pilate questioned Him. “Aren’t you going to answer?” he said. “Listen to all their accusations.”  Jesus refused to say a word and Pilate was amazed.

Pilate spoke to the crowd, “What do you want me to do with the one you call King of the Jews?” They shouted back. “Crucify him!”

‘But what crime has he committed? Pilate asked.

They shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify him!’

Pilate wanted to please the crowd, so he set Barabbas free for them.  Then he had Jesus whipped and handed Him over to be crucified.
